STATEMENT

The collages from the Mosaic Series mark a departure from the last fifteen years of image making.  So, it is with a mixture of excitement and mild apprehension that I expose the early forays into an unfamiliar territory.

The starting point or the initial references in my paintings has always  been  driven by my participation in the “natural world”,  whether it’s time spent in the vegetable garden  behind  the studio or foraging for wild edible mushroomsdeep in  a  mountain forest.  This activity has made me a witness to the beauty, the many mysteries, and the magical life beyond the studio.  But, in returning to the studio, these experiences find some visual form and more mysteries and magic ensues.  Sometimes the source material may be apparent or somewhat recognizable, but most often it’s a starting point.  An example would be “Mosaic”#3. The black and grey linear forms that penetrate into the fracturing grey-white area  on the top left, owes its beginnings to a saprobic fungus, named “Dead Man’s Fingers” (Xylaria polymorpha), and indeed do appear to be black digits emerging out of the ground, when encountered in the woods.  Through a reductive process any sense of menace that the original forms may have possessed has been understated or eliminated.  Distanced from its original source, the new shape/image becomes an element within the improvised development of the overall image.  I have chosen to explore the new imagery through the collage medium because it seems to be a more open system.  Taking fragments of previous images, juxtaposing them with newly crafted passages, layering, and reshuffling the elements lead to constant surprises and, hopefully, interesting accidents.  This method seems to allow a way forward.

A few words on the methods and materials used in the assembling of the collages:  The collages are a mixture of my painting and printmaking experiences.   Some of the elements are old pieces of paper which had been used to test colors or develop an image for a previous work.  The final layer of the collage may include a mixture of oil paint and oil-based polyurethane floated upon a sheet of acetate.

Lithograhic ink can rolled onto the acetate, acrylic or oil paint may also brushed onto the surface of the acetate.  All attachments and bonding of the elements are achieved by the use of adhesives that are ph neutral and acid free.
