Fred stonehouse

Fred Stonehouse was born in 1960 in Wisconsin. He received his BFA from UW Milwaukee in 1982. He had his first solo show in Chicago in 1983 and has since then exhibited through the country as well as in Mexico, Amsterdam, Rome and Berlin. He has been the recipient of an NEA Arts Midwest Grant and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Individual Artists Grant. He is currently a Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Wisconsin.

STATEMENT

I have long been interested in the idea of history and how it is understood through memory.  By history, I don’t necessarily mean the official record of our collective past, but something more along the lines of a personal recollection of one’s life experiences and learning.  The ways in which we recall events and how we express them in language always create a new memory or a new interpretation.  Our struggle to capture some semblance of truth or factual history is almost comical in its failure, but that same struggle is what makes us human and is one of the only ways we know to arrive at connection with ourselves and others.

In this new group of paintings and works on paper, my characters are seen attempting to communicate in various ways.  They weep, bleed, sweat and speak to each other, never quite connecting in the ways that they had hoped to.  The inexact nature of their limited language leads them to half expressed thoughts and doubly expressed emotions.  The earnest attempts at communion are simultaneously poignant and ridiculous.

Like their ideas, the characters themselves are like a distant memory; often only half formed. They reside in a space of becoming or dissolving.  Their efforts to reach each other conceptually are analogous to their difficulty in achieving physical form.  Some arrive at a physical substantiality, allowing them more agency within the narrative while others exist only as specters, exerting their influence through suggestion and the subconscious.

Very much as in a dream, the narratives in my work suggest the mythic as seen through the lens of the everyday.  Subjects as big as life and death, love and loss, culture and politics commingle with the mundane details of daily life; bits of overheard conversation, glimpsed moments from the personal lives of others, advertising, media, work, etc…  I like to think that my work is like a fabric woven from these various threads and that any point in that fabric has an interesting particularity, but when taken together, those points arrive at a compelling psychological whole.
