Kentucky based artist Lisa Weiss received her BFA in Painting and Sculpture from the Middle Tennessee State University and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Louisiana State University. Her works is included in numerous public and corporate collections including Hunter Museum of Art (Chattanooga, TN) and Tennessee Watercolor Society (Nashville, TN). Weiss' paintings are process driven, created with a variety of water based materials such as ink, watercolor and acrylic on collaged papers. She constructs her surfaces by seeking out varieties of paper with idiosyncratic tones and structures such as Bhutanese, Kozo, Lokta, Mulberry and Arches paper.
I am always relating the art process with living in general. I am interested in what the process has to teach about living wisely & fully. I think art is a necessity in society and pivotal for human progress.
I love the idea of changing the larger world by everyone starting with themselves. Looking at the world today, some would say this idea is idealistic, perhaps naive. This group of works seems to be about heading toward more positive thought, working from instinct, relying on chance occurrences with a reliance on repetition as a grounding element to inform a disciplined life. The works are about creating a universal shared space while also retaining an intimate meditative quality. Perhaps they are about balance, walking a middle path, engaged, yet unattached.
My work explores mark making, patterning, gesture, momentary awareness and paring down to essentials. The connection between place, process, and materials in relation to a meditative state is always present. Non-objective forms that predate label, things imperfect and evolving are of interest. The work is inspired by architecture, primitive art, metaphysics and the practice of yoga. I am concerned for the state of the earth, the feminine wave and the reflective slow revolution of expanding consciousness.
